What this calculator does

A ceiling is simply length × width, but the right coat count and coverage still matter. This tool estimates ceiling paint for a flat, rectangular ceiling and returns gallons and liters, so you are not guessing when you reach for a roller and extension pole.

How to use it

  1. Enter the room's length and width — the ceiling area is their product.
  2. Set the number of coats; ceilings usually take two for an even, shadow-free finish.
  3. Enter the coverage from your ceiling paint, then read the gallons.

The formula

Ceiling area = length × width. Paint = area × coats × (1 + waste%) ÷ coverage per gallon.

Example calculation

A 12 ft × 14 ft ceiling, two coats, paint rated at 350 sq ft per gallon, 10% waste:

  • Ceiling area: 12 × 14 = 168 sq ft
  • Two coats: 168 × 2 = 336 sq ft
  • With 10% waste: about 370 sq ft
  • Paint: 370 ÷ 350 ≈ 1.06 gallons

Result: About 1.1 gallons — one gallon usually covers a room this size in two coats.

Buying and planning tips

  • Use a true ceiling paint; it is flatter and hides roller lines and lap marks.
  • Many ceiling paints go on pink or blue and dry white, which helps you see missed spots.
  • Maintain a wet edge and work in strips across the short dimension to avoid lap marks.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Estimating only one coat — ceilings often show roller marks until the second coat.
  • Using wall paint, which is less flat and shows imperfections under raking light.
  • Forgetting that textured or popcorn ceilings drink up noticeably more paint.

Assumptions and limits

  • The ceiling is treated as a simple rectangle (length × width).
  • Coverage is approximate; textured or popcorn ceilings cover less per gallon.
  • Light fixtures and vents are small and are not subtracted.

Frequently asked questions

How much paint to paint a ceiling?

Multiply length × width for the area, then apply two coats and divide by the coverage rate. A 12×14 ft ceiling needs about one gallon for two coats — enter your own room size above for an exact figure.

How much paint do I need for a ceiling?

Multiply length × width for the area, then apply two coats and divide by the coverage. A 12×14 ft ceiling needs about one gallon for two coats.

Can I use wall paint on a ceiling?

You can, but dedicated ceiling paint is flatter and hides roller marks and imperfections far better under overhead light.

Why does a textured ceiling need more paint?

Texture and popcorn finishes have much more surface area than a flat ceiling, so they soak up extra paint — plan for noticeably less coverage per gallon.

Do I need two coats on a ceiling?

Usually yes. A single coat often leaves faint roller lines or patchiness; two coats give a clean, uniform finish.
