What this calculator does

An accent wall is a popular, low-commitment way to use a bold paper. This tool estimates the rolls for one feature wall, taking the pattern repeat into account — bold designs usually have a larger repeat, which slightly increases the count.

How to use it

  1. Enter only the accent wall's width and height.
  2. Enter the roll width, length, and the pattern repeat (bold prints often repeat 18–24 in).
  3. Keep a 10–15% allowance and read the rolls for the feature wall.

The formula

Drops = ⌈wall width ÷ roll width⌉. Cut length = ⌈wall height ÷ repeat⌉ × repeat. Rolls = ⌈drops ÷ (roll length ÷ cut length)⌉ × (1 + waste%).

Example calculation

A 13 ft wide, 9 ft tall accent wall, 20.5-in × 33-ft rolls, 21-in repeat, 10% waste:

  • Drops: ⌈13 ÷ 1.71⌉ = 8 strips
  • Cut length: round 9 ft up to a whole 21-in repeat ≈ 10.5 ft
  • Drops per roll: ⌊33 ÷ 10.5⌋ = 3
  • Rolls: ⌈8 ÷ 3⌉ = 3, ×1.10 ≈ 3 rolls

Result: About 3 rolls — keep one extra from the batch, as a bold print is hard to re-match.

Buying and planning tips

  • Center the most striking part of the pattern on the wall for the best effect.
  • A large repeat looks dramatic but wastes a little more at the top of each strip.
  • Buy one spare roll; a feature wall draws the eye, so a mismatched patch shows.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Underestimating the repeat on a bold design, then coming up a roll short.
  • Measuring the whole room when only one wall is being papered.
  • Not planning where to center the pattern before hanging the first strip.

Assumptions and limits

  • Only the single accent wall is estimated.
  • Bold patterns often have a larger repeat, which raises the roll count.
  • A 10–15% allowance covers trimming and centering the pattern.

Frequently asked questions

How many rolls for an accent wall?

Most single accent walls need about 3 rolls with a standard roll size, though a large pattern repeat can push that higher. Enter your wall and roll dimensions for a precise figure.

Why do bold patterns need extra paper?

Bold designs usually have a larger pattern repeat, so each strip is cut to a bigger whole-repeat length and wastes a little more at the top.

Should I center the pattern?

Yes. Centering the focal motif on the wall looks intentional and balanced; plan it before you cut the first strip.

How much spare should I keep?

Keep at least one full roll from the same batch. An accent wall is a focal point, so any future patch needs to match exactly.
