What this calculator does
Most flooring is sold by the pack, and each pack lists its coverage. This tool converts your room area — plus a waste allowance — into whole packs, so your order matches the carton sizes on the shelf.
How to use it
- Enter the room length and width.
- Enter the coverage per pack exactly as printed on the carton.
- Choose a layout or set your own waste percentage, then read the packs needed.
The formula
Area = length × width. Order area = area × (1 + waste%). Packs = ⌈order area ÷ pack coverage⌉.
Example calculation
A 12 ft × 15 ft room, straight layout, packs covering 20 sq ft, default 10% waste:
- Floor area: 12 × 15 = 180 sq ft
- With 10% waste: 180 × 1.10 = 198 sq ft
- Packs: ⌈198 ÷ 20⌉ = 10 packs
Result: 10 packs — and one spare pack from the same batch is wise for repairs.
Buying and planning tips
- Use the exact pack coverage from your carton; it varies a lot between products.
- Round up to whole packs — most stores won't split a pack.
- Keep one pack in reserve so future repairs come from the same production lot.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a generic pack size instead of the figure on your carton.
- Forgetting the waste allowance and ordering exactly the floor area.
- Buying loose by area when the product only sells in whole packs.
Assumptions and limits
- Coverage per pack is taken from your input; confirm it on the carton.
- Default waste follows the layout (straight 10%, diagonal 15%, herringbone 18%).
- Packs are rounded up to whole units.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out how many packs of flooring I need?
Multiply length by width, add a waste allowance, divide by the coverage per pack, and round up. A 12×15 ft room with 20 sq ft packs needs 10 packs.
Where do I find the coverage per pack?
It is printed on the carton, usually in square feet (and square meters). It varies by plank or tile size, so don't assume a standard number.
Why round up to whole packs?
Stores rarely sell part-packs, and you want enough to finish the floor plus a small reserve for cuts and repairs.
How many spare packs should I keep?
One full pack from the same batch is a sensible reserve, since later lots may differ slightly in color or finish.
