What this calculator does

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is sold by the box, and the right number depends on the room area, the layout, and an allowance for cut planks. This tool sizes a vinyl plank order, defaulting the waste to the layout you choose and rounding up to whole boxes.

How to use it

  1. Enter the room length and width.
  2. Choose the layout — straight runs waste less than diagonal.
  3. Enter the coverage per box from the carton (LVP boxes often cover ~20–30 sq ft).
  4. Leave waste blank to use the layout default, then read the boxes.

The formula

Area = length × width. Order area = area × (1 + waste%). Boxes = ⌈order area ÷ pack coverage⌉.

Example calculation

A 14 ft × 16 ft room, straight layout, boxes covering 24 sq ft, default 10% waste:

  • Floor area: 14 × 16 = 224 sq ft
  • With 10% waste: 224 × 1.10 = 246.4 sq ft
  • Boxes: ⌈246.4 ÷ 24⌉ = 11 boxes

Result: 11 boxes — keep one box from the same lot for future repairs.

Buying and planning tips

  • Let LVP acclimate in the room for the time the maker specifies before installing.
  • Stagger end joints and avoid short end pieces near walls for a stronger, better-looking floor.
  • Mix planks from several boxes as you go so any shade variation blends in.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using a straight-layout allowance for a diagonal install and running short.
  • Skipping acclimation, which can cause gaps or buckling later.
  • Buying just enough with no spare box for repairs.

Assumptions and limits

  • Default waste: straight 10%, diagonal 15%, herringbone 18% — override for tricky rooms.
  • Coverage per box is taken from your input; LVP box sizes vary by brand.
  • The room is treated as a rectangle; split irregular spaces into sections.

Frequently asked questions

How many boxes of vinyl plank flooring do I need?

Find the area, add a waste allowance, divide by the coverage per box, and round up. A 14×16 ft room with 24 sq ft boxes needs about 11 boxes for a straight layout.

How much waste should I add for vinyl plank?

About 10% for a straight layout and more for diagonal or herringbone. Complex rooms with many doorways may need a bit extra.

Does vinyl plank need to acclimate?

Most rigid-core and LVP products do. Leave the boxes in the room for the time the manufacturer states so the planks adjust to temperature and humidity.

Should I keep extra planks?

Yes. Keep one full box from the same lot; later production runs can differ slightly in shade or texture.
