What this calculator does

This calculator turns a room's floor area into an estimated tile installation cost. It multiplies the area by an installed price per square foot — which already bundles materials and labor — and can add the cost of tearing out the old floor. You choose a budget, average, or premium price level, or type a real quote into the custom-price box to compare.

How to use it

  1. Enter the room's length and width to set the floor area.
  2. Pick a price level — average reflects a typical porcelain install — or type your own price per square foot.
  3. Choose whether the old floor needs removing, which adds a per-square-foot cost.
  4. Read the estimated total, and use the typical span to sanity-check quotes.

The formula

Cost = floor area × installed price per sq ft (+ floor area × removal price per sq ft, if removing the old floor). Installed price includes materials and labor.

Example calculation

An 8 ft × 10 ft bathroom floor at the average porcelain level of $15/sq ft, no removal:

  • Floor area: 8 × 10 = 80 sq ft
  • Installed cost: 80 × $15 = $1,200
  • Typical span: 80 × $8 (budget) to 80 × $30 (premium) = $640 – $2,400

Result: About $1,200 to tile this floor at an average price — confirm with local quotes.

Buying and planning tips

  • Get the installed price (materials + labor) from at least two local tile setters; rates vary a lot by region.
  • Large-format tile, mosaics, and intricate patterns raise the labor portion noticeably.
  • Budget separately for substrate prep and waterproofing in wet areas — they are easy to forget.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Pricing only the tile and forgetting that labor is often the larger half of the bill.
  • Ignoring old-floor removal and disposal, which can add several dollars per square foot.
  • Treating an online average as a fixed quote instead of a starting point.

Assumptions and limits

  • Installed prices are approximate U.S. averages as of May 2026 and vary by region and material.
  • Removal of old tile is estimated at about $4 per sq ft when selected.
  • Substrate repair, waterproofing, and trim are not included.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to install tile per square foot?

Installed tile typically runs about $8 per sq ft for a budget ceramic job, around $15 for a standard porcelain install, and $30 or more for large-format or natural stone. Enter your room size above to turn that into a total.

Does this price include labor?

Yes. Each price level is an installed price that bundles both the tile and professional labor. If you only want materials, enter your tile's per-square-foot price in the custom box.

How much does removing old tile cost?

Tear-out and disposal of an old tile floor commonly adds about $3 to $7 per square foot. This tool uses roughly $4 per sq ft when you turn removal on.

Are these prices exact?

No — they are approximate U.S. averages for budgeting only. Regional labor rates, tile grade, and room complexity all move the number, so always get local quotes.
