What this calculator does

This calculator estimates luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring installation cost by multiplying the room's floor area by an installed price per square foot that includes the planks and labor. Pick a budget, average, or premium level — covering thin floating LVP up to thick glue-down rigid-core — add old-floor removal, or enter your own price.

How to use it

  1. Enter the room's length and width.
  2. Pick a price level or type your own installed price per square foot.
  3. Add removal of the old floor if needed.
  4. Read the estimated total and the typical span.

The formula

Cost = floor area × installed price per sq ft (+ floor area × removal price per sq ft). Installed price includes materials and labor.

Example calculation

A 12 ft × 14 ft room in mid-range rigid-core LVP at $7/sq ft, no removal:

  • Floor area: 12 × 14 = 168 sq ft
  • Installed cost: 168 × $7 = $1,176
  • Typical span: 168 × $4 to 168 × $11 = $672 – $1,848

Result: About $1,200 for an average LVP install in this room.

Buying and planning tips

  • A thicker wear layer (mil rating) lasts longer in busy rooms and pet households.
  • Rigid-core (SPC) planks hide minor subfloor flaws better than thin flexible vinyl.
  • Floating LVP is very DIY-friendly; glue-down costs more but suits large or commercial areas.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing by price alone and getting a thin wear layer that scratches quickly.
  • Ignoring subfloor prep — even rigid-core needs a reasonably flat base.
  • Forgetting transitions and trim in the budget.

Assumptions and limits

  • Installed prices are approximate U.S. averages as of May 2026.
  • Old-floor removal is estimated at about $1 per sq ft when selected.
  • Subfloor leveling and trim are not included.

Frequently asked questions

How much does vinyl plank (LVP) flooring cost to install per square foot?

Installed LVP is roughly $4 per sq ft for thin floating planks, about $7 for mid-range rigid-core, and $11 or more for thick glue-down. Enter your room size to get a total.

Is LVP cheaper to install than hardwood or tile?

Usually, yes. LVP's click-lock planks install quickly and are DIY-friendly, so both materials and labor tend to be lower than hardwood or tile.

Does the price include the planks and labor?

Yes — each level is an installed price. Use the custom-price box to model a materials-only DIY figure or a specific quote.

Are these costs exact?

No. They are approximate U.S. averages for planning only and vary by wear layer, install method, and region — get local quotes.
